Here's a quick rundown on some of our most popular holes at Forest Ridges from owner P.C. Rasmussen:

To start out on our par-35 South Nine, we give you a bit of a break with a hole we call “Deceiving,” an easy dogleg left, measuring 371 yards from the tips and 294 from the forward tees. Try to stay to the center to avoid a downhill lie. You'll need a mid- to short-iron for your approach to the green.

On the 4th, you come to a hole nicknamed “Namakagon,” because of the peek you get at Lake Namakagon and the main lodge through the treetops as you stand in the tee box. This is one of our famous downhill par-3s (192 yards from the back and 143 from the front).

“There's a 40-foot drop in elevation down to the saddle green below you,” Rasmussen said. “The saddle makes it interesting. It's nothing to have a 60 to 70 foot putt over the saddle to get at the pin. You need to get on the correct side of the green to score well on this hole.”

You close out this nine with “The Narrows,” a long forced carry off the tee over a woodland pond and glaciated rock wall. This dogleg right is a tough par-4 that requires a tee shot up the middle over the wall. Play a fade if you've got it. The second shot is a long one to a mounded green. Shots missing the green can bounce off for a lengthy chip back onto the green.

On the back nine, you'll face off with the wild and wet 13th, one of the most famous holes in Wisconsin, Rasmussen said. We call it “Erik's Pocket,” named after P.C. Rasmussen's brother.

“It was selected one of the 18 holes of a statewide fantasy course by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism,” P.C. said. It's a dramatic par-3 (181 yards from the back and 96 from the front) that is all carry over water. The elevated tee box drops 30 feet to a woodland lake and back up to the elevated green 30 feet up the bank.  "Its caused more than one golfers knees to shake." he says with a laugh.

Enjoy the view on “Pine Island,” our par-4 16th (350 yards from the back and 270 from the front) but don't get too engrossed in the scenery because you'll need to keep your focus on your game.

“It's a downhill hole, but your hit has to be accurate in distance and in club selection. You need about a 220-yard tee shot. Any farther and you will hit onto a sharp downholl lie or carry into the wetlands. Then you need a mid-iron approach to an island green shaped like an artist's palette,” Rasmussen said.

The kidney-shaped green wraps around a giant white pine emerging from the "thumb" of the palette. “Most of the time, you'll have a downhill lie for your approach shot and it's a challenge to stop the ball on the green,” Rasmussen said.

“Risky Business,” a par-5 measuring 479 yards from the back and 364 from the front, is our finishing hole and it's a grand finale for your round.

“It's a double dogleg that goes right first and then left,” Rasmussen said. “If you hit a perfect tee shot then you can go for the hole on your second shot for a chance at eagle. Easy to say but for wooded ravine that eats golf balls and loves to force a penalty. It's enticing; there's this big, giant green, the flags waving at you so you feel like you have to go for it every time. It's a great finishing hole and fantastic for scrambles.”
